Common Questions & Mistakes

Should you find yourself reflecting on this and thinking you might have made a mistake, don’t worry. Our firm has successfully handled many cases where clients initially made errors. Contact our office to find out how we can help you.
Q: Are police asking you to come in for an interview?
If you are or have been a target for a criminal investigation, know your rights and hire an attorney who specializes in criminal defense. At Edward Mouton Attorney At Law, we know allegations of criminal activity can have a devastating effect on a family.
Q: Should I tell my side of the story?
Good question. In most cases, the answer is going to be no. There are many people in Louisiana jails and prisons on probation or with criminal records because they THOUGHT what they told police would help. Per Miranda Warning, “anything you say can and will be used AGAINST you.”
Q: If I ask for an attorney, won't I look guilty?
No. You will look intelligent! Police understand that it is wise to hire an attorney. They just don’t want you to do it because it makes their job easier if they have unlimited access to a suspect. Edward Mouton Attorney At Law has represented numerous police officers and their families because they know to ‘lawyer up’ as soon as they learn they are being investigated.
Q: Can I discuss my case with the attorney on the phone?
For professional responsibility reasons, Edward Mouton Attorney At Law does not risk client confidentiality by discussing legal matters via telephone. Although, oftentimes, a client may be out of town or out of state, in limited circumstances, our office will accommodate a telephone conference. We will also accommodate late-night and weekend appointments upon request.
Q: But my loved one is in jail?
Oftentimes, a new or potential client may be detained at a correctional facility. Edward Mouton Attorney At Law will personally interview clients at the correctional centers. We understand that family members want to be involved in every aspect of the case. Therefore, we encourage friends and family members to schedule appointments and stay actively involved. Once our office is retained, we routinely visit with clients who are incarcerated on a regular basis.
Q: What should I bring to my appointment?
Please be sure to bring any citations, tickets, summons, or any other paperwork upon posting the bond. We also ask that you bring a photo ID and any witnesses. Please leave your children at home, as your full attention is required.
Q: Will I speak directly to the attorney?
Your initial consultation will be with Mr. Mouton. After the initial appointment, you will keep in contact with the firm’s paralegal unless you make an appointment. Paralegals allow law offices to keep legal fees as reasonable as possible. During court hearings and other legal proceedings, Edward Mouton Attorney At Law will be at your side every step of the way.
